Sri Dhanvantari is considered to be the lord of Medicine and Health. Dhanvantari Homam or Puja is dedicated to the Lord Dhanvantari Moorthy who is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Lord Dhanvantari is a Maha Vishnu Avatar. In the Vedas and Puranas, he is described as the gods’ physician and the deity of Ayurvedic medicine. Lord Dhanwantari’s birthday is celebrated on the 13th lunar day of the darker side (Krishnapaksham) in the Aswini Month (October/November).
His name means ‘He who holds the Dhanus’. In Sanskrit, Dhanvantari is translated as ‘That which removes illness’, ‘One who has a good knowledge of medicine’ and ‘Master of Ashta (eight) Siddhis (powers) or abilities’.Dhanvantri has 4 hands with Amritham(immortal nectars), herbs, conch shell and ayurvedic scripts and henceforth is called Father of Ayurvedic Medicine.
Lord Dhanwantari is said to have emerged from the palazhy (milk ocean) with Amurutha Kalasam on this day. The birthday celebration is held in an upbeat and enjoyable setting.
